From the airport it is best to take the airport bus to the city. There are two companies: Flybuss Bergen (red colours) and SAS flybussen-TIDE (blue colours). For timetables and other information check the websites of Flybuss Bergen and SAS flybussen-TIDE.
The airport bus Flybussbergen is an express bus from Bergen Airport to the city centre. Exit the terminal and turn right past the SAS airport bus. By train
For schedules of the trains check the excellent web site of the German Railways (in 6 languages) or the one of Norwegian State Railways. At the latter site you can buy tickets. The train ride from Oslo to Bergen is very pretty, but expensive (about NOK 1600 return) and takes around 7 hours. Bergen railway station is close to Marken Guest house and in walking distance to the hotels (but not Montana Hostel). To reach the different accommodations from the railway station, you can download directions as a .pdf file here.
By bus
The Norway Bus Express Network offers very good long-distance connections. For schedules of the trains check the excellent web site of the Nor-Way website. At this site you can also buy tickets. The Central Bus Station in Bergen is a terminal for most of the buses serving Bergen. It also has luggage deposits. The station is now a part of ‘Bergen Storsenter’ (a shopping mall). A word of Warning: Norway is a very mountainous country, so bus rides might take long time and go on curvy roads. The bus station is close to Marken Guest house and in walking distance to the hotels (but not Montana Hostel). To reach the different accommodations from the Central Bus station, you can download directions as a .pdf file here.
By boat
Several ferries are connecting Denmark (some also Germany and Sweden) to Norway. Fjord Line offers a ferry from Hirtshals (Northern Denmark) to Bergen via Stavanger. Other operators go to other places in Southern Norway. Color Line offers services on the following routes: Kiel-Oslo, Strömstad-Sandefjord, Hirtshals-Larvik and Hirtshals-Kristiansand. DFDS Seaways operates a ferry from Copenhagen to Oslo. For the latter connections this implies a long drive from Southeastern Norway to Bergen - and is probably only wise if you plan a longer holiday in Norway after the conference - a good idea, since the weather is usually fine and the country less crowded. On some days, boats can be crowded by drunk people. The harbour is in walking distance to most accommodation places (but not Montana Hostel).
By own car
Most people will come in via Oslo or one of the harbours Larvik or Kristiansand (there is also a direct fery from Denmark to Bergen - see above) when driving to Bergen with their own car. One should allow generous time for driving in Norway. The road from Oslo to Bergen is very scenic and you should plan 7 hours of pure travel time (and you will want to make many stops if the weather is good) Please note that road tolls are charged in Oslo and Bergen. There are 13 toll station in Bergen. Toll fee is payable all day, every day. Prices are NOK 25,- for a car less than 3.5 tons and NOK 50,- for a car more than 25 tons. Tolls must be paid every time when entering the city. Infos about the road toll in Bergen can be found here.
