General
The aim of the summer school "Life on Earth and Beyond" is to give participants a thorough overview of the scientific, historical, philosophical and ethical questions arising in this field. It is co-organised by the European Astrobiology Institute and the Space Humanities Group at Lund University. The course is open for students and scientists in humanities, natural, social and political sciences. The summer school will, amongst others deal with the following themes:

  • Definition of life in a historical and philosophical context
  • Philosophical challenges in defining life
  • Biochemical evolution
  • Evolution of biological functions
  • Search for life outside Earth
  • Philosophical, ethical and political questions arising with the quest for life on other celestial bodies

A multitude of highly merited researchers have agreed to teach at the course (see the Programme page for details. The deadline for application is 1 April 2022 23:59:00 UTC.

Bursaries
Participants from EAI institutions selected by the EAI for bursaries will be offered free meals and accommodation in a shared house for 4 from 29 May (dinner) until 2 June (breakfast), but have to fund their travel on their own. There is no special application for the bursaries, just send in your application form. Participants selected for the bursaries will be notified in mid-April (in good time before the registration deadline).

Fees for accommodation and meals
There are no registration fees charged for the course for EAI member institutions (see European Astrobiology Institute for a list. For others a registration fee of EUR 50,- will be charged. Participants from EAI institutions selected by the EAI for bursaries will be offered free meals and accommodation in a shared house for 4 from 29 May (dinner) until 2 June (breakfast), but have to fund their travel on their own. There is no special application for the butsaries, just send in your application form. Other participants, will, however have to fund their own travel, accommodation and meals. The package rates for the participants are

The course packages cover

  • Accommodation in houses (2 floors) with en-suite facilities from 29 May evening to 2 June 2022 morning
  • Breakfasts, Coffee breaks, lunches and dinners from 29 May 2022 evening to 2 June 2022 morning
  • Excursion around Ven and visit to Tycho Brahe Museum and other sights
  • Farewell dinner
  • Course material

The fees have to be paid via PayPal to ESF (instructions will follow). For registration, selected participants will be requested to send the registration form sent to them by the course organiser back to him (email: wgeppert@fysik.su.se) before April 25th 2022. . The registration fee for attendeees from non-EAI institutions is noot imncluded in the package
