Summer course on Exoplanets
La Palma, Canary Islands, 24 September - 2 October 2014

 

General

The aim of the course is to give participants a thorough multidisciplinary introduction into the field of exoplanets, their detection, types, characterization, and to explore the possibility of life on exoplanets. In addition, more general planetary subjects like formation of planetary systems, habitability of planets, and physical processes in planetary atmospheres will be covered. To give participants some hands-on experience with detection of exoplanets, observations of several exoplanet transits using the Nordic Optical Telescope will be carried out. The course is open to PhD students and early career scientists (up to 8 years after their first Ph. D.) from all countries. It is co-organised by the Nordic Network of Astrobiology and the EU COST Action "Origin and Evolution of Life on Earth and in the Universe". Fees and refunds

There are no fees charged for the course. Participants, will, however have to fund their own travel, accommodation and meals. The package rate is EUR 800,- for accommodation in shared en-suite double room and has to be paid directly to the conference venue in cash or by credit card. Accepted participants from universities located in countries taking part in the COST Action "Origin and Evolution of Life on Earth and in the Universe" will get a refund, which is as follows:

  • Participants from universities located in the following countries are entitled to a flat refund of EUR 600,- for travel, lodging and meals expenses: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK
  • Participants from universities located in the following countries are entitled to a flat refund of EUR 800,- for travel, lodging and meals expenses: Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia


Herein it is the location of the institution, and not the nationality of the applicant that counts. An updated list of countries taking part in the COST Action can be found here.

Accepted participants will be informed about refund formalities after 15 July. Please note that they will only get refunded after the course.

The course package of EUR 800,- covers

  • Accommodation in shared double rooms with en-suite facilities from 23 September evening to 3 October 2014 morning
  • Breakfasts, Coffee breaks, lunches and dinners from 23 September evening to 3 October 2014 morning
  • Excursions according to schedule and transfers to the Nordic Optical telescope
  • Farewell dinner
  • Course material
